Aerification & Course Closure Update
Summer has quickly come upon us as the temperatures start to rise and the Bermuda starts to transition back from dormancy. Our Maintenance Crews have another busy summer ahead of them with heavy aerifications across all your PGA WEST golf courses.
Along with the typical course closures and aerification practices you will also notice several other projects taking place on the Nicklaus Private Course. This Course will be closed June 13th to September 15th while we have extensive plans to chemically remove all the Rye Grass. This will eliminate competition allowing the Bermuda grass to fill in and get well established before the overseeding this fall. This has been a common practice used at several courses over the past few years to help improve the Bermuda conditions and create a better overseeding base during the fall. Below is a timeline of what is expected to happen while the Nicklaus Private is closed:
June 1-3 Chemically treat the Rye Grass for removal
June 7 – 20 Rye will start to brown out and fade away
June 20 – July 20 Heavy fertilization to promote Bermuda grow back along with extensive verticutting and aerification to enhance root development.
July 20 – Sept 15 Final grow in portion of the Bermuda grass to create a solid canopy for this falls overseed and enhance the transition for next season.
Other projects that will be happening during the closure include; renovations to landscape beds and grass planters, leveling and compaction of sunken area on #10 green, trial sprigging of the Bye Hole with a newer variety of Ultra Dwarf for putting greens called Mini Verde, and a new pump station installed in July.
We appreciate your support while we continue to improve of your golf courses and make your entire PGA WEST property better for years to come!
