Our History

The 1980s was a time of explosive golf course development in the desert. During this time, visionaries Ernie Vossler and Joe Walser Jr. saw an opportunity to develop La Quinta, California, and began construction on what we now call PGA WEST! Their first course, the Pete Dye Stadium Course, opened in 1986 and was soon followed by the Members-only Palmer Private Course. The first Bob Hope Desert Classic was held at PGA WEST in January of 1987, bringing worldwide attention to the area. By 1989, two more courses opened for players: Nicklaus Tournament Course and Nicklaus Private. The Weiskopf Private was developed in 1996, followed by the last PGA WEST Course to open, the Greg Norman Course in 1999.

PGA WEST was not Vossler and Walser’s first vision for La Quinta. Their company, Landmark Land Co., purchased the La Quinta Resort in 1977 for development. They opened the Pete Dye Mountain and Pete Dye Dunes Golf Courses in 1980 next to the Resort. By 1987, the private Pete Dye Citrus Course had opened!

PGA WEST earned its title as "The Western Home of Golf in America™" by hosting many renowned tournaments, including players from the PGA TOUR, Senior PGA Tour, LPGA, and NCAA. One of the most famous shots in golf history occurred right here at the Pete Dye Stadium Course, when Lee Trevino made a hole-in-one during the 1988 Skins Game at number 17, "Alcatraz." On the 18th hole of the Arnold Palmer Private course, David Duval's eagle won the 1999 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic (now The American Express) with a record-shattering 59. It is one of professional golf's greatest moments.

In 2020, Century Golf Partners, one of the most experienced golf and club management teams in the world, and Hankuk Industry, an owner of private clubs and golf courses in the U.S. and Japan, formed a joint venture and acquired the PGA WEST Portfolio, which includes two private clubs (PGA WEST Private and The Citrus Club), five clubhouses, and nine golf courses. Today, loyal fans and visitors return to PGA WEST to watch great pros, and amateurs battle it out for another triumph. PGA WEST continues to host The American Express™ tournament on the Pete Dye Stadium Course and the Nicklaus Tournament Course every January. The Prestige at PGA WEST is hosted on the Greg Norman Course annually during President's Day. PGA WEST will soon host its first PGA National Club Championship in December 2021!
